Design will be a key factor in your Moodle LMS site’s success — or else totally undermine it. Here’s how to get your Moodle design working for you.

Design and visuals are a key aspect of any Moodle LMS. It’s a key factor in enticing your learners to engage with the platform, as well as ensuring that using the platform is an enjoyable, engaging experience on an ongoing basis.

There are some very simple steps you can take to make sure your Moodle LMS is designed to make it as appealing as possible to the people that matter to you.

Let’s look at some ways of boosting your Moodle design.

Create a familiar look and feel

You can immediately make your learners feel at home on Moodle by using design features that mirror the look and feel of your organisation’s other systems. If your Moodle LMS site instantly seems like an extension of familiar platforms — and an extension of your established brand — you’re well on your way to encouraging engagement.

Build bitesize courses

Moodle design and user experience is improved if you opt for compact courses with few modules rather than big courses with lots of modules. It’s better for user morale, cleaner on the screen and easier to use if the courses are simple and the next step obvious.

Responsive Moodle design

It’s worth mentioning that a key aspect of design is to choose a responsive Moodle LMS theme, so that learners can benefit from high standards of design on any device. Your LMS should be designed so that your users can learn at a time and place that suits them.

Make your LMS easy to use

The best way of boosting your design is to make the LMS as easy to use as possible. A familiar look and feel, bitesize courses and responsive design all have a part to play in that. But it’s also important to think about usability, accessibility and navigation, so that your Moodle site is designed to be as easy as possible for all of your learners to access and navigate.

Often that means decluttering screens — something Moodle itself has been working on — and creating intuitive journeys around your LMS.

Use Spark

At its most basic level, Spark is a Moodle theme — but it does so much more than a typical Moodle theme. It gives you access to an array of configurations that help you to bring the highest standards of design, UX and functionality to your LMS without the expense of developing a bespoke Moodle theme.
