Better Cotton
Growing incomes for cotton farmers around the world with not-for-profit organisation Better Cotton.

Boosting sustainable cotton farming practices
Better Cotton is a non-profit organisation that works with cotton farmers worldwide to improve cotton production. This includes helping farming communities survive and thrive, while protecting and restoring the environment.
To achieve these goals, Better Cotton needed a learning management system to help it deliver training on improved farming practices to its network of partners working with cotton farmers in cotton-producing countries worldwide.
Key LMS goals
The platform needed to support Better Cotton’s worldwide operations in several important ways. We were tasked with helping the organisation to achieve these key project goals.
Deliver scalable training
The LMS needed to be capable of growing with Better Cotton and support its long-term goals.
Low-connectivity learning
The LMS had to be suitable for use in countries with limited or no internet connections. This meant ensuring learners in remote areas could easily access offline training.
Multilingual learning
Better Cotton needed to reach its diverse audience of learners in multiple languages. This meant a multilingual LMS with English as the primary language.
Country-specific content
Learning content needed to be tailored to each country. Best practices and advice for cotton farming in Asia could be very different to the training needed in Africa.
Interactive courses
The LMS needed to leverage the power of interactive learning content to maximise learner engagement and knowledge retention.
Mobile-friendly LMS
Given the prevalence of mobile devices over desktop in many cotton-growing countries, the platform, courses and content had to be optimised for mobile.

Targeted, accessible training
After working with Better Cotton to identify Moodle Workplace as the LMS best suited to meet all of the organisation’s needs, we began implementing the platform.
We used Moodle Workplace’s multi-tenancy configuration to enable Better Cotton to create separate training environments for different countries while retaining a single LMS installation. Shared global resources can easily be duplicated across multiple tenancies, with country-specific training offering streamlined, intuitive and relevant learning for farmers in each country.
Better Cotton’s new LMS is equipped with multilingual interfaces so that the platform is accessible for learners around the world to learn in their preferred language. The site will ultimately be available in Indian, French, Portuguese, Mandarin, Urdu, Turkish and English.
Moodle Workplace’s native mobile app is well-suited to the low-connectivity locations in which Better Cotton often operates. Learning resources can easily be downloaded to the app and accessed offline, even when the learner has no internet connection.
The in-built H5P content builder gives Better Cotton all the tools it needs to share the highest levels of interactive learning resources. These modules work online or offline, ensuring consistent and engaging learning experiences, even in remote areas. The platform also supports SCORM packages to provide an alternative format for offline learning content.
We helped the Better Cotton team develop training materials that are optimised for both online and offline environments. This further increases the consistency of learning experiences for all learners. We also advised on how to achieve mobile-friendly content design within Moodle Workplace.

Better Cotton can now deploy training to its worldwide audience in a way that is accessible, engaging and helpful to people working in each cotton-growing country.
Offline learning functionality, multiple language options and mobile-friendly content ensures that learners in even the most remote locations can benefit from Better Cotton’s mission to promote improved cotton farming practices. The multi-tenancy infrastructure ensures users in all countries benefit from training that is highly relevant to their circumstances.
The use of highly engaging, interactive content increases knowledge retention and, therefore, also increases the impact of Better Cotton’s sustainability messages.
The platform creates a strong foundation for ongoing, long-term improvements to farming practices globally — and for Better Cotton to be able to scale its platform to take on these challenges.
