Learning and development responsibilities can suddenly sneak up on any SME. Particularly for startups or ambitious small businesses, one day you’re happily delivering one-to-one training to new starters and the next, that has become completely unsustainable.

When that day arrives, you will need a workplace learning platform to deliver training across your team. That typically means buying a learning management system (LMS).

An LMS is a substantial investment for any organisation, so is it the best option for workplace learning in an SME?

Significant investment needed

While an open-source LMS like Moodle avoids the expensive per-user fees of some learning platforms, any learning infrastructure requires some investment. For SMEs operating on tight budgets, this cost might be too great.   

Excessive for some micro SMEs

For very small teams of less than 10 people, and particularly for SMEs in which L&D needs are limited and don’t need to be refreshed regularly, an LMS might be overkill for the level of workplace learning being delivered. 

Although this will result in more work for managers in managing and delivering learning, that could make sense when offset against the potential cost of an LMS.

Your SME needs an LMS that will grow and adapt with it over time. Crucially, you also don’t want to be paying for more capacity and storage space than you need right now. Choose a scalable LMS with pricing tiers that match your growth plans.

Flexibility

A highly customisable LMS that adapts to the learning experiences you want to deliver is a good option for any organisation. For a growing SME, it offers the additional benefit of continuing to meet changing and emerging needs.

Starting with a flexible LMS means you can build on your existing learning technology infrastructure, instead of starting from scratch with a new learning platform at every stage of your growth.

Integrations

Look for an LMS that offers time-saving and money-saving integrations that will benefit your LMS. For example, will your LMS integrate with your HR system? Can you integrate your learning platform with Microsoft?

There are various LMS integrations to consider. It’s just a matter of working out how best to avoid duplication and make efficiency savings across your business.

Hosting

How you host your LMS will have implications for performance, security and costs. Unless you have specialist in-house knowledge, a managed LMS hosting package is likely to be the best option.

You will also need to decide whether cloud hosting or dedicated hosting is most appropriate for your circumstances. Cloud hosting, which tends to have a lower cost and the benefit of pooled resources, is the best LMS hosting for SMEs in most cases. For some businesses, the extra control and independence of dedicated hosting might be preferable.

Tracking and reporting

As your SME grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to monitor who has and hasn’t taken specific training. Powerful LMS reporting systems streamline and automate this process.

This means you can see at-a-glance reports – or even automatically allocate learning and send reminders to learners – to make sure that you’re on top of skills gaps, compliance training and regulatory requirements.
