How we make learning management systems more intuitive by improving UX for administrators.

We devote a lot of time, effort and design expertise to improving the user experience of learning management systems for our customers. While our top priority in this regard is helping the customer deliver the learning experiences they want to give their learners, the LMS user experience for end users is only half the story.

Any LMS is also used on a daily basis by administrators, and their engagement, productivity and performance levels are all impacted by the user experience.

That’s why we work on improving LMS user experience for admins as well as end users.

How do we go about improving LMS user experience for admins?

UX workshops

In a similar way to how we approach wider LMS user experience, we hold UX workshops in which we:

  • Place your admins in real-life scenarios to understand how they want to use the LMS.
  • Build personas for different admin types within your organisation.
  • Explore potential features for your new LMS.

That final point, exploring potential features, might involve us suggesting additional functionality we believe will be helpful based on what admins want to achieve or it might be establishing whether a piece of functionality you’ve requested will be used by admins and deliver the benefits intended.

Build user journeys

Based on the outcomes of the UX workshops, our other discussions and your initial brief, we can start to build admin user journeys that make it as easy and intuitive as possible for administrators to navigate around your LMS to complete their tasks.

Simplifying and minimising

Open source learning management systems, like Moodle LMS and Totara Learn, are absolutely jam-packed with incredible features. But the vast majority of them will never be used by your admins. By removing features you don’t need, we can streamline the navigation and menus to make it easy for your admins to find what they’re looking for.

Automating

Another key way in which we can improve LMS user experience for admins is to take laborious tasks off their plate. Enrolment, learning pathways and reporting are some of the areas in which we can introduce automation to avoid the need for time-consuming administrative walk.
