Discover all of the exciting new features in Moodle 4.3.

Moodle 4.3 — the latest version of Moodle LMS — is here and the new release brings with it a range of useful new features for admins, educators and learners.

The latest release is heralded by Moodle as “a leap forward in user experience and efficiency”, and it’s easy to see why. There are several improvements and additions to the Moodle LMS user interface that are geared towards a smoother, slicker and more intuitive UX.

Let’s take a look at some of the key features of Moodle 4.3.

Smarter in-course communication options

Moodle 4.3 sees the launch of a new integration with the Matrix messaging system. The result is more modern, Slack-like messaging functionality within courses and more seamless integration with Slack, Teams and other messaging systems.

Slicker course navigation

It’s now much easier to navigate large and complex courses. The course index can be expanded or collapsed by learners with one click. There are also previous and next buttons now floating on book activities, making them easier to navigate.

More compact and intuitive Activity cards

Activity Cards are streamlined and redesigned in Moodle 4.3. This makes it easier for educators to manage course activities and for learners to navigate courses. There are also improvements that make it easy to edit and manage individual activities by clicking the ellipsis icon on the Activity card. This all means less scrolling for everyone.

Big LTI improvements

Moodle 4.3 gives you more power to incorporate external tools thanks to significant improvements to the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) functionality. There’s now the option to add and manage pre-configured tools at a course level, encouraging educators to adopt useful LTI tools. An LTI external tool management page gives admins control over how and where LTI tools are used.

Bolstered security features

Headlined by the introduction of support for multi-factor authentication (MFA), Moodle 4.3 also boosts the security of your Moodle LMS. There’s also the option to configure Captcha for login pages and a “do not track” option for YouTube and Vimeo. All these and more advanced security features give you greater control and a simplified way to maintain a safe, secure and compliant LMS.

Streamlined grading

Time-saving improvements to the Gradebook make it easy for educators to grade work. Creating and editing grades can now be done in modal windows over the existing page rather than taking you to a different page. There’s also a sticky footer that gives easy access to the most frequently used grading tools.

Better question bank

It’s now easier to search and filter the question bank. You can also create a customised view of the question bank so that you can see the things that matter to you. This makes it quicker and simpler to create and manage assessments in Moodle 4.3.

Time-saving activity completion settings

Site-level default settings for activity completion mean less time spent tweaking completion settings for admins and educators. With completion conditions set for the entire LMS, you no longer need to spend valuable time managing these.

Upgraded content creation editor

Improvements to the TinyMCE editor bring more versatile and intuitive content creation to Moodle 4.3. There are enhancements to the user interface and how the editor handles HTML code. This means better results, more intuitive editing and smoother content creation.
